In a one-on-one interview, we had the opportunity to sit down with a Lebanese American hotelier and a potential candidate for the Lebanese Presidency. During the interview, we discussed his perspective on the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas in relation to Lebanon.
“I’ve seen too many videos from both sides to see these two as anything other than mirrors of one another. Too many dead Palestinians. Too many dead Israelis. The fact that Westerners take sides when both are clearly out to oppress and destroy the other is beyond me. While we watch Israeli teenagers kidnapped there are no cameras on the hundreds of Palestinians who are being killed by Israeli bombs. Neither those Israelis nor those Palestinians had an ounce of culpability and yet they are the ones to suffer, and yet the Western media only focuses on the humanity of one side. It’s inexcusable and we are cowards for not pushing Israel and our Arab allies to the table. The West would rather make money from these people by selling them weapons and buying their oil. The West’s hypocrisy will be the West’s undoing. The PLO needs to step in, Hamas should be dissolved, Netanyahu needs to finally realize that the Palestinian people have rights, and they are there to stay, a two-state solution is only way out.” stated Dfouni.
Mr Dfouni went on and explained: The Israeli-Hamas conflict has been a long-standing and deeply entrenched struggle in the Middle East. It is a situation fraught with complexities, historical animosities, and humanitarian concerns. In this context, Lebanon faces a crucial decision – whether or not to get involved in the conflict.
Presidential hopeful George Dfouni explains the reasons why Lebanon should exercise caution and refrain from direct involvement.
1. Preservation of National Stability:
Lebanon has a history of internal divisions, sectarian tensions, and political instability. Involvement in the Israeli-Hamas conflict could exacerbate these problems, leading to internal strife and risking the nation’s stability. It is in Lebanon’s best interest to prioritize its internal affairs and focus on addressing its pressing economic, social, and political challenges.
2. Avoidance of Further Destruction:
Lebanon has experienced the devastating consequences of war and conflict throughout its history. Involvement in a conflict with Israel or Hamas would inevitably result in destruction, loss of life, and infrastructure damage. The country can ill afford further devastation, given the fragile state of its economy and infrastructure.
3. Humanitarian Concerns:
The Israeli-Hamas conflict often leads to a significant humanitarian crisis, with civilians, particularly in Gaza, bearing the brunt of the suffering. Lebanon should prioritize its commitment to humanitarian values and avoid contributing to the cycle of violence that inflicts harm on innocent people.
4. Preservation of Diplomatic Relations:
Lebanon should safeguard its diplomatic relations with countries in the region and beyond. Direct involvement in the Israeli-Hamas conflict could strain these relationships and isolate Lebanon on the international stage. Maintaining diplomacy and pursuing peaceful solutions to conflicts should be paramount.
5. Focusing on Economic Recovery:
Lebanon is grappling with a severe economic crisis, characterized by hyperinflation, unemployment, and a collapsing currency. It is imperative for the Lebanese government to focus its efforts on economic recovery, securing international aid, and implementing much-needed reforms. Involvement in a regional conflict would divert valuable resources away from these pressing economic concerns.
6. Respect for International Law:
International law recognizes the rights and responsibilities of nations in the context of armed conflicts. Lebanon should adhere to its obligations under international law, which include not engaging in hostilities unless in self-defense. Taking sides in the Israeli-Hamas conflict without a clear legal basis could expose Lebanon to international criticism.
7. Pursuit of Regional Stability:
Lebanon has a stake in regional stability. By refraining from involvement in the Israeli-Hamas conflict, Lebanon can contribute to a more stable Middle East. Stability in the region would be conducive to economic growth, security, and peace.
Lebanon’s decision regarding the Israeli-Hamas conflict is a weighty one with significant implications for its future. By choosing to abstain from direct involvement, Lebanon can prioritize its internal stability, humanitarian values, diplomatic relations, economic recovery, and adherence to international law. In doing so, it can play a constructive role in fostering regional stability and ultimately aspire to a more peaceful and prosperous future”
Lebanon has been searching for a new leader since President Michel Aoun’s term expired in 2022. George Dfouni is contemplating the idea of running to become Lebanon’s next president.
The country has already held countless parliamentary sessions to find a new leader but to no avail. In this crucial time, when Lebanon desperately needs a new president, Mr. Dfouni is stepping forward with his years of experience in both the private and public sectors.
