The first round saw Pro Mini Golf Hall of Famer and PPA player Greg Newport of Icard, NC, take an early lead with a three-stroke advantage. Newport, one of only four players in Putt-Putt tournament history to achieve a perfect 18, faced competition from reigning (APA) N.C. State Champion Richard Miller and newcomer Gavin Hoke, both from the Hickory region. Meanwhile, Bryan Deal found himself within striking distance, securing a position among the top six contenders.
In a remarkable turn of events during the second round, Deal exhibited exceptional skill, recording the lowest score of the day with an impressive 23. This stellar performance not only narrowed the gap between him and the leader but also positioned him ahead of Miller and other competitors. Heading into the third and final round, Newport retained control of the lead, with Deal trailing closely behind by just one stroke.
As the tournament reached its climax and the scores were tallied, Bryan Deal continued his impressive run by securing the second-lowest round of the day with a score of 24. This feat granted him the lowest consecutive rounds of the tournament, ultimately propelling him to a first-place finish. Deal edged out Miller by two strokes, who settled for the runner-up position, and Newport by five strokes, securing third place.
Deal’s victory represents a significant milestone in his inaugural full season of Putt-Putt competition, adding a notable accolade to his growing resume. Noteworthy is his achievement as the co-holder of the Best Ball single-round tournament record in Hickory, shared with teammate Miller. Additionally, he clinched the title of the 2023 Hickory City Best Ball Champion alongside Miller.
The public is invited to participate in putting tournaments held throughout the year at the Putt-Putt Fun Center, promising an exciting showcase of skill and camaraderie for participants of all levels.
