When Sahar Jahani started working in a television writer’s room, it was impressed upon her that the best stories come from our “own experiences and trauma,” she writes in this week’s Modern Love essay.
Then 27, Ms. Jahani, who is Muslim, had never kissed or intimately touched a man, because she had abided by her faith’s rule of avoiding the opposite sex until marriage. At work, “I judged my own experiences as unworthy of sharing, mainly for my choice not to have sex or be in a relationship,” she writes, adding, “I felt like a failure.”
Soon, she found herself scrolling through the contacts in her phone, stopping when she saw a guy she had met at her former workplace. Ms. Jahani sent him a text message. “Can I come over?”
